Q: I want my design to be as big as I can get it.  What's the size of the largest image that can be printed on a T-shirt?

A: The maximum design imprint dimensions are thirteen (13) inches wide and fifteen (15) inches high.  However, an image of this size will only fit properly on apparel that is size youth large (YL) or larger (including all adult size apparel).  It is possible to imprint a design at fourteen (14) inches wide, but only if scaling a particular image to that width would not exceed thirteen (13) inches in height.  The design would then be wider than tall (and therefore, not able to occupy the entire imprint area of the front or back of the most common apparel , such as tee shirts, sweatshirts, etc.).
It is also very important to remember that a design must be scaled so that it will fit properly on all the requisitioned apparel sizes.  That is, a large design that looks good filling up the imprint area on an adult XL will likely not fit at all on a youth small (YS).  Conversely, a design that is scaled to fit on a youth small will appear diminished when printed on an adult XL.  An imprinted design must be either scaled to fit the smallest size garment, or two sets of films /screens must be created /processed in order to accomodate both youth and adult sizes, which may significantly increase the cost of the project, depending on the total quantity of items.  And so, in general, the wider the range of apparel sizes for a given image, the more likely that the client will have to either decide to bear the cost of two sets of films and screens (for two pre-determined image sizes,) or to establish an intermediate image size for all apparel.  For example, a project order of size adult small (AS) to adult extra large (XL) will probably require only one set of films and screens to imprint the image, but a project order ranging from youth small (YS) to adult triple extra large (3X) will likely require the processing of two sets of films and screens in order to maintain properly imprinted visual proportions.

Q: Does a large imprinted image cost more than a small one?

A: Not as far as a straightforward project is concerned... that is, a project where no revisions to the provided artwork are necessary in order to suitably imprint the image at a particular size.  The cost of a particular imprint depends primarily on how much work it takes to properly render it, such as the number of applied ink colours or the complexity of the design (color gradients, line quality, halftones, etc.)... but not the imprinted image's size.  Occasionally, the client supplies a very small image that must be imprinted much larger than the provided image.  In such cases, measures must be taken to either reconstruct the design to maintain detail and quality, or a larger image must be obtained by the client and delivered to our art department.  As long as the provided design is of sufficient resolution, it can be imprinted as large or as small as necessary with no adjustment in cost.

 client requirements

initial considerations

Before a project can be officially scheduled for production, the client must be able to make the following accomodations:

1. Allowing for the current production timeframe
The timeframe is roughly dependant on the season and established by the saturation of other projects in the current production schedule (there is generally much more production activity in the summer than in the winter).  Projects that are required by the client within a period that is significantly less than the current timeframe are considered rush orders, which are assigned a rush charge that is calculated based on both the current production schedule and the amount of time alloted to complete the project.

Our current production timeframe can be found on the  home page, here .  all other client project requirements that are described in this section must be met in order to establish the first day of the timeframe.

2. A requisition of at least twelve (12) pieces of imprinted apparel
contemporary designs is geared to produce mass quantities of imprinted apparel, and it's simply not worth the expenditure of time and resources for both the client and our staff to screen-print less than the twelve unit production minimum.  contemporary designs will, in fact, print less than twelve pieces... but unfortunately, the client will be billed for a dozen units anyhow, so it really makes little sense to order less than that.  our staff will be able to refer you to services that are able to supply quantities smaller than twelve pieces, if necessary.

3. A deposit equal to fifty percent (50%) of the total project cost (TPC)
The deposit is required in order to cover the initial cost of apparel availability, and is calculated before clothing taxes are applied to those clients that are not tax exempt.  If for any reason the client's project is suspended, abandoned, or becomes otherwise unnecessary to produce, the deposit will be refunded to the client, minus the cost of restocking the requisitioned items.

4. provision of tax exempt documentation
clients that represent and coordinate projects for organizations/businesses that are exempt from the application of sales, clothing or local taxes must be ready to provide either the form ST-119.1 (Exempt Organization Certification) or the form ST-120 (Resale Certificate) from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.  contemporary designs will provide these forms on request, which must be returned to our office with all necessary information entered (particularly the tax exempt reference number).  The forms will be available to download from our library section very soon.

given that the obligations detailed above are fulfilled, the client must deliver the three items listed below in order to schedule a project as official

1. purchase order (PO)

the client must draft and submit a completed contemporary designs purchase order form (or project request form), which must be endorsed by the authorized contact by signature and either delivered to our staff or deposited into the new projects bin at the office.  if you must leave the purchase order in the boxes with the apparel, please notify the production staff.  the submitted purchase order must include the following information...

a. project title/event
enter the name that the client wants to assign to the specified project for the records, based on the name of the company/organization requesting imprinted apparel (not the client's company) or the event/occasion associated with the project.  the project title is attached to all facets of contemporary designs office records, including digital graphic design files, film archives and the accounting department.  contract clients may also include their own purchase order reference numbers that are derived from their own records.

b. contact/customer
enter the name of the properly designated representative of the company, organization or agency with whom contemporary designs is authorized to both correspond and coordinate the designated project.  the proper contact may also list any other associates with whom our staff is permitted to contact regarding a specified project.  contemporary designs will not correspond in any way with the client's customer unless distinct permission is given by the client to make such contact.
